    About the Inn

When our family originally conceived the idea of opening the Inn, we pictured a snug two-room lodge (a home-away-from home so to speak) to welcome and entertain our closest friends. We owned a modest plot of property in the historical quarter of Bangkok that had been in the family for seven generations and was ideal for such a plan. The property where the Old Bangkok Inn sits was once a palace owned by our family's forefathers.

We wanted our guests to be close to Bangkok’s main historical attractions while at the same time still be in the comfort of their own living space. In our travels, we had found large hotel chains to be far too generic and impersonal for our taste, so we imagined bringing the beautiful and charming inns and bed and breakfasts we had so loved in Normandy and New England to Old Bangkok.

When word got out of what we were trying to achieve, we started receiving requests not only to increase the number of rooms but also to open our doors to everyone and anyone who wanted to stay. In early 2004 we took the plunge and began our journey of building an enchanting ten-room bed and breakfast inn that replicated the emotions of Old Bangkok and that would be truly memorable to all our guests.

At the Old Bangkok Inn we believe that the little things make the difference between an ordinary stay and an extraordinary one. This applies not only to the visible features of our inn but also of the amenities we provide and the services we offer. Nantiya and her staff can answer your questions and help make your stay that much more enjoyable.

Before her retirement in 2004, Nantiya was employed in the service industry for over three decades.       Green Philosophy

At OBI, we are committed to reducing our impact on our community and on the environment, our mission is to provide the art of hospitality within a model for urban ecology by observing the “three R’s” philosophy of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. The Old Bangkok Inn is a fully non-smoking establishment and one of the few "Green Hotels" in Bangkok. More specifically, here is how we are helping our community and environment:

- OBI conserves water: eco-friendly hotels are water-friendly hotels; at OBI we use low-flow showerheads as well as low-flow/dual flush toilets. Additionally, OBI has also implemented a voluntary linen -and towel-reuse program in all our guest rooms.

- OBI conserves energy: at OBI we use energy-efficient appliances and energy-efficient lighting. Moreover, in order to minimize energy usage, we have designed our building so that we can use daylight for as much of each day as possible and installed in-room sensors to shut down all lights and appliances when guests leave the room.

- OBI promotes green computing: at OBI we only use flat-panel screen monitors for our PC's. Flat-panel screen monitors models are an easy greener choice; they lack the five to eight pounds of lead found in conventional CRT monitors and consume 50% less power. Oh... and did we mention that there is a complementary computer with broadband connection in every room at the OBI?

- OBI uses solar energy: all the hot water used at OBI comes from our solar water heater system. We estimate that OBI consumes 25% less energy as a result of our greater reliance on solar power.

- OBI recycles and reduces waste: we encourage all our guests to recycle paper, aluminum cans, plastic and glass by providing recycle bins in every room. OBI is also committed to reducing waste by buying bulk and reducing packaging.

- OBI uses "good wood": Most of the wood furniture and all the fixtures (stairs, doors, & windows) used in OBI is rebuilt, reclaimed or salvaged from old teak wood. The quality and beauty of this teak is far greater than that of teak cut from the same species today-and the purchase of it did not bring down a single tree.

- OBI supports social causes: Through our "Support the Community Initiative" guests staying at the OBI are kindly encouraged to contribute US$1 per room per night to one of our designated philanthropic partners; the Old Bangkok Inn will match the contribution dollar for dollar.* (Of course, every guest is at liberty to opt out of this program, otherwise guests choose a pre-selected charitable organization to donate to when they check in.) Guest by guest, dollar by dollar we hope to increase awareness for the less fortunate in Thailand, as well as give back to the community we so heavily rely upon.

Support the Community Initiative

When staying at the OBI you may choose to give to one of the organizations listed below. Your kind contribution will go a long way to assist our environment, community as well as the less fortunate in our society. If you wish to provide separate donations to any of these organizations please click here for more information.

- The Home for Handicapped Animals Foundation is a shelter for over 1,000 homeless and handicapped animals - mostly abused by human, all in need of your help.
